Oddvør Johansen: Wilma Wasp
This story was first published in My Christmas Book in 2004, and has now been made into a picture book. It is about the most recent Faroese settlers; wasps, of course.
The beautiful picture book tells us the tale of Wilma the queen wasp, who is waking after a whole winter’s sleep. This is an amusing portrayal of how terrified we are of wasps, but also of why wasps are important after all.
"She was in such a hurry; she sweated and glued and chewed and chomped, and the tiny round ball grew into a cosy and warm little wasp’s nest, a hive with hundreds of small baskets where Wilma was going to lay her little eggs.
And on St. Gregory’s Day when the scouts marched with the brass band to celebrate the return of the oyster catchers, on that very day, Wilma laid one thousand tiny eggs and tucked them into the baskets.”
A wonderful book for 3-6 year-olds, who learn to see wasps in a new light.
